Trong tiếng Anh viết trang trọng, mệnh đề điều kiện có thể được diễn đạt bằng cách đảo vị trí chủ ngữ và trợ động từ, bỏ 'if'. Cấu trúc này xuất hiện thường xuyên trong thư tín kinh doanh trang trọng và TOEIC Part 5/6.

Dạng đảo ngữ theo loại điều kiện

Loại 1 (Should)

Should + S + V₁, ... (= If + present simple, ...)

Loại 2 (Were)

Were + S + ..., ... (= If + S + were/past simple, ...)

Loại 3 (Had)

Had + S + PP, ... (= If + S + had + PP, ...)

Quy tắc then chốt

Omit 'if' | Place auxiliary (Should/Were/Had) BEFORE subject | Comma after inverted clause

Đảo ngữ loại 3: Had + chủ ngữ + QUÁ KHỨ PHÂN TỪ (không phải động từ nguyên mẫu).

Sau 'Should' trong đảo ngữ, dùng động từ nguyên mẫu — không bao giờ dùng 'will'.
